Who We Are

Graceful Bibi-Babu Initiative Uganda (GBBU) is a community-based organization committed to restoring dignity, strengthening care systems, and improving the quality of life of vulnerable older persons and the children under their care.

We serve communities where aging, poverty, and caregiving responsibilities intersect, often leaving families unsupported and unseen. Our work is rooted in compassion, accountability, and local partnership. By combining direct support, advocacy, and community empowerment, we ensure that older persons are protected, children are nurtured, and communities grow stronger together.

Our Journey Timeline

Six key milestones that shaped our path to creating lasting community impact

Foundation

The Moment That Sparked Change

Graceful Bibi-Babu Initiative Uganda (GBBU) began from a moment that demanded action. On a rainy day in Namulaba village, Mukono District, Mr. Musisi discovered a semi-permanent house collapsing under heavy rains. Water dripped inside, making the home unsafe. Inside lived an elderly woman, helpless and overwhelmed. This encounter revealed a reality of lives lived without support or hope.

Uncovering a Hidden Reality

Mr. Musisi continued through the village and surrounding community. He found that many older persons struggled to meet even basic needs. With no consistent support, they were largely forgotten. This was a widespread challenge affecting multiple households. The urgency to intervene became increasingly clear, and the vision for a structured solution began to take shape.

Compassion

Small Acts, Growing Responsibility

Determined to help, Mr. Musisi offered personal support, providing sugar, salt, rice, soap, and other essentials. These small acts brought temporary relief, but the growing needs quickly outpaced his capacity. Personal efforts alone could not sustain the required support. This realization sparked the need for a larger, collective approach to make lasting change.

Building a Shared Vision

Mr. Musisi shared his vision with his wife, Mrs. Robinah Musisi. He also shared with his friend, Mr. Muwonge Deo, who would later become the Deputy Executive Director. Together, they began discussing how to turn concern into coordinated action. They saw that isolated efforts were not enough to address the widespread need they had witnessed. Through conversations and research, they realized that creating lasting impact would require bringing more people and resources together. This partnership transformed personal compassion into a structured plan for community-wide support.

Understanding Intergeneration Vulnerability

Deeper engagement revealed a hidden crisis: many elderly caregivers were raising grandchildren abandoned by absent parents. Both generations were trapped in a cycle of hardship, struggling for food, healthcare, education, and safety. The elders faced overwhelming emotional and financial strain. Supporting one generation without the other would fail. True change required an integrated, intergenerational approach.
